The Household & Commercial Products Association (HCPA) is seeking to hire a Manager of Sustainability to be responsible for managing the Association’s sustainability programs and tracking sustainability activities that impact the household and commercial products industry and member company products at the federal and state levels. This position will also staff association committee(s) and be responsible for the technical and regulatory matters of relevant industry issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Manager of Sustainability will be responsible for overseeing sustainability activities. The position will have a broad range of responsibilities including, but not limited to, the following duties:

• Working collaboratively with HCPA’s Government Relations & Public Policy, Scientific & Regulatory, and Communications departments to execute the industry’s policy positions on sustainability and product stewardship matters.
• Assisting the Vice President of Sustainability & Product Stewardship in developing comprehensive sustainability initiatives and outreach activities supporting household and commercial products.
• Providing technical guidance on recycling, reuse, and reduction of household and commercial products and packaging.
• Working to strengthen relationships with allied trade associations, industry coalitions, regulators, NGOs, and elected officials to support sustainability and product stewardship efforts.
• Monitoring and tracking sustainability and regulatory activities and developing appropriate metrics to communicate the progress and success of these efforts on behalf of the household and commercial products industry.
• Drafting collateral for internal and external use to educate, inform, and support the household and commercial products industry’s policy positions and communicate the industry’s progress related to sustainability efforts.
• Participating in meetings with stakeholders, including government officials, to negotiate sustainability policies and programs consistent with the Association’s positions.
• Staffing and managing the work of member-led committees and task forces focused on priority issues.
• Assisting the Vice President of Sustainability & Product Stewardship with planning and delivering sustainability programs at industry events, including HCPA’s Annual and Mid-Year Meetings.

Education and Qualification Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s (preferred) degree in a technical, scientific, or related field with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience. Trade association experience is a plus.
• Collaborative and team-oriented professional who can successfully interact with staff members, association members, the Board of Directors, and other key stakeholder organizations.
• Strong understanding of sustainability processes and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Must have excellent writing and communication skills, including the ability to translate complex technical issues into simple explanations.
• Must have demonstrated ability to speak to large audiences.
• Must have demonstrated ability to organize large projects and stakeholder groups.
• Strong interpersonal skills (communication, teamwork) and personal effectiveness skills (decision-making, time management).
• Team player who will positively contribute to the collaborative and fun culture of the organization.
• Self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced office/hybrid environment.
• Must be able to work two days in person at HCPA’s office in Washington, D.C.
• Must be flexible and able to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Proficient with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and legislative/regulatory tracking software platforms.
• Strong knowledge of U.S. sustainability and product stewardship policy, particularly concerning the sustainability of chemical products and services, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), packaging sustainability, environmental marketing claims, and climate policy.
• Knowledge of manufacturing industries and business operations is a plus.
• Experience working to develop and implement sustainability strategies for organizations is a plus.
