The National Consumers League (NCL), America’s pioneering consumer advocacy organization, is seeking an extroverted, entrepreneurial, creative and highly motivated professional with a strong commitment to public interest work to serve in a new position, the LifeSmarts Program and Development Coordinator. The position requires development experience and work with young people is an added plus. The League (www.nclnet.org) is a national nonprofit organization that for 120 years has been protecting and promoting social and economic justice for consumers and workers in the United States and abroad. NCL focuses on fraud prevention and education, food and drug safety, teen-consumer literacy, child labor, and fair labor standards. LifeSmarts is the League’s premier consumer education program for middle school and high school students.
Under the direction of the Director of Development and LifeSmarts Program Director, the Associate will support the LifeSmarts program by writing grants and funding proposals, cultivating funding prospects, representing the program to major donors, partners, and potential partners, and providing event, communications, and administrative assistance. This is a new position that will assist NCL in developing and diversifying new revenue sources for LifeSmarts while nurturing and expanding current funding relationships. The LifeSmarts Development Associate will report to the Director of Development and has no direct reports.
Stewardship of donors and potential donors (40%)
Work with senior NCL staff and independently to develop and implement a strategy for expanding corporate support to include prospecting, networking to explore connections to funders and build relationships
Develop strategies for cultivating existing and potential sponsors, keeping them abreast of LifeSmarts activities and achievements; create and implement a robust calendar for donor-centered communications; use consistent, accurate, and appropriate information-sharing mechanisms for stewarding prospects and donors
Staff the LifeSmarts Advisory Board, which is composed of both longstanding and new sponsors and partners
Travel to cities where LifeSmarts is operating locally and meeting with potential donors there, representing NCL and LifeSmarts
Strategize creative projects to support LifeSmarts
Assemble donor materials for events and meetings
Staff booths at relevant conferences and events
Maintain accurate records and donor lists
Grant and Proposal Writing (35%)
Support the LifeSmarts Program Director and the Director of Development with an emphasis on cultivating new relationships with potential donors, research, writing, and editing prospects, proposals and partnerships in tandem with emerging trends in philanthropy
Prepare, submit and maintain deadlines for applications to corporate foundations and companies to meet agreed income target goals and reporting
Manage, analyze and streamline grant tracking charts for LifeSmarts department
Prepare project reports
Administrative Support (25%)
Work with LifeSmarts program staff to produce the 4-day annual National LifeSmarts Championship, with a focus on partners, partner recognition, alumni, cultivating sponsorships for specific program components, and providing administrative support prior to and throughout the event; travel to the event includes six days, five nights, minimum
Communicate with sponsors to obtain prize and goodie bag donations for national championship teams. Order prize and gift items as needed
Work with Executive Director to identify and invite VIPs
Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Writing, editing, and oral communication skills
An outgoing personality is a must; interacting with program sponsors, partners, educators, and students; ease in public speaking
Detail-oriented and proven ability to work well under deadline
Superior program and project management experience. Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and complete work independently
Experience in development, fundraising, and major gifts and/or foundations
Demonstrated direct responsibility for raising significant funds for other non-profit organizations
A good working knowledge of consumer education, non-profit advocacy, and ideally the LifeSmarts program is a plus
Comfortable working with diverse communities
Competency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and WordPress expected
Extensive travel expected
Experience teaching, working with youth groups and designing extracurricular programs a big plus
Experience with event planning a plus
Bachelor’s Degree required
