The Development Director is a key leader in the organization and is a valued partner with the Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Directors at Adaptive Adventures. The Development Director is responsible for overseeing the planning and execution of the organizational fundraising plan including administration of all types of income streams. Other key duties include board development, staff development, and community outreach. The position reports directly to the Executive Director.
General Responsibilities Include the Following:
1) Fundraising: Works with Executive Director, staff and Board of Directors to ensure financial viability of the organization. • Direct and manage Adaptive Adventures’ general development agenda to meet or exceed annual fundraising goals and produce revenue for both operations and programs • Assess current fundraising efforts to identify potential for expansion and new avenues of revenue growth • Responsible to plan, execute, and follow-up on all tasks related to special events and fundraisers • Create and implement a short and long-term development plan in partnership with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors • Develop and promote relationships with external funding organizations, including private and corporate foundations with similar missions that align with Adaptive Adventures • Develop and manage a portfolio of major giving prospects and donors • Advance key solicitations and the closing of principal gifts • Strengthen the Adaptive Adventures brand among current and prospective donors • Draft gift proposals, stewardship reports, briefings, and other materials as needed, including relevant communications on behalf of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors • Maintenance of revenue tracking in the donor database • Identify with the Board, opportunities for donor cultivation events; and manage their planning and execution, thereof • Create fundraising-oriented promotional collateral with communications and marketing staff • Determine and define donor recognition opportunities • Improve annual giving by 65 percent in the first year ($250K), increasing giving to at least $1.5 Million annually within the next three years in accordance with the strategic plan. • Grow individual giving, major gifts, and grant/contract funding • Dramatically increase net revenue from existing special events; producing net revenues of a minimum ratio of $3 for every $1 spent • Develop a planned-giving program • Implement and maintain donor wealth management system • Assist staff in grant/contract writing
2) Administration and Operations: Works with the Executive Director and staff to implement and integrate strategic fundraising plan into all operations within the organization. • Work closely with Executive Director to implement a strategic fundraising plan • Develop the annual development budget, with focus on revenue/solicitation projections • Prepare development reports for presentation to the Board of Directors • Work closely with finance, administrative and program staff to ensure the effective operation of accounting systems and the meeting of fundraising regulatory mandates • Work with the Executive Director to create a long-term growth and strategic staffing plan for the development office • Train and supervise development staff in the oversight of record keeping, report preparation, database management, and related tasks • Work with Executive Director and Finance Director to determine the need for and feasibility of volunteer groups, councils, and other engagement opportunities to develop the donor pipeline • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Organizational Leadership • B.A. or B.S. or equivalent experience required. Areas of preferred study or experience include business administration, organization development, marketing or nonprofit administration • At least five years of experience in development and fundraising in the nonprofit sector, leadership, and/or organization building; experience in developing and implementing a clear fundraising plan and the tactical plans needed to achieve success • Demonstrated experience with project planning, program management, personnel and supervisory best practices • Excellent organizational skills; ability to establish systematic procedures to determine priorities for the accomplishment of Adaptive Adventures’ goals and strategies • Ability to work effectively with a small, diverse and collaborative team • Creative, flexible with an upbeat “can-do” attitude • Skill in utilizing problem-solving strategies for organizational crises • Skills in evaluating and formulating recommendations for organizational operations, including fundraising, budget formulation, and strategic planning • Basic expected knowledge of Adobe Suite, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Microsoft Office Suite?Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Revenue Generation • Track record of philanthropic fundraising and proven ability to build long-term relationships with donors; enthusiasm about telling Adaptive Adventures’ story to cultivate and steward supporters • Sound judgment, impeccable ethical principles with an ability to maintain discretion and respect confidences • Knowledge of financial, budget and audit reports • Knowledge and experience in successfully submitting applications, managing, and closing out grant or government contracts • Commitment to donor satisfaction and customer service
Communications and Partnerships • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to work well with diverse stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, organizational partners, Board members, policy makers, members of the media, community members, and other stakeholders
