As the Managing Director, Finance and Operations for the Security Industry Association (SIA), you will manage a budget of $7 million with $8.6 million in reserves. Working closely with the CEO as a trusted partner, you will provide sound financial advice and collaborate with staff across the organization to determine the viability of new ideas and timelines for implementation. You will directly supervise four full-time staff in the membership and operations departments and manage certain supplier relationships, as well as oversee cross-department collaboration with all organization staff.
You will lead with your strong understanding of budget and financial principles and ensure the organization’s finance and accounting practices are timely, accurate, and complete, making recommendations and providing appropriate levels of analysis to the CEO, Treasurer, Board of Directors, and other departments as appropriate. You will help prepare the organization’s annual budget and understand the financial implications of the Board Strategic Plan, regularly reviewing and analyzing organization activities as compared to budget goals. And you will ensure your exceptional attention to detail and exacting focus on quality processes extends to existing third-party vendor relationships.
From finance and HR to membership and IT, you will have a hand in both improving existing processes and introducing new, tangible ideas that will better serve SIA and current/prospective members. Through expert project management, you will ensure the organization remains successful, regularly moving new initiatives forward and solving operational challenges before they become crises.

Responsibilities of the Managing Director, Finance and Operations
Oversee and review organizational finances for accuracy, consistency, and clarity.
Work in collaboration with the outside accounting firm to review monthly revenue statements, financial documents, forecasts, and provide financial analysis. Maintain a strong working knowledge of financial performance against the annual budget plan and provide insight into key financial trends.
Prepare and confidently deliver financial presentations to the SIA Executive Committee and Board of Directors, providing appropriate analysis and short-term/long-term recommendations.
Work closely with the CEO to prepare the annual budget and perform regular budget review and analysis of department programs. Mentor staff to increase financial and budgeting knowledge.
Oversee and perform the bookkeeping activities of the organization, including regular electronic financial transactions.
Lead preparation for the annual SIA audit process in collaboration with the accounting firm and auditor.
Liaise with the organization’s investment advisor and make strategic recommendations for updating the SIA investment policy.
Maintain a working knowledge of key SIA programs, strategies, and initiatives so as to be able to provide valuable advice to staff in the absence of the CEO.
Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and facilitate internal processes from start to finish, in collaboration with appropriate departments throughout the organization to achieve annual goals. Develop metrics to track results.
Ensure the rapid execution of all high-priority organization programs, identifying gaps in resources that could impede progress.
Research and develop new organization initiatives, collaborating across departments and presenting strategic plans to the CEO for review and discussion of options.
Improve cross-departmental communication. Research, implement, and evaluate team collaboration solutions.
Supervise the committee management process. Work with staff members managing committees to resolve issues where needed.
Manage SIA trademark and copyright processes with outside law firm.
Provide input into the operations of a new foundation expected to launch in Q1, 2020.
Negotiate and conduct analyses of proposed conference/event contracts to mitigate potential risks.
Oversee relationship with database management software vendor.
Oversee the development and implementation of additional member benefits.
Set the strategic direction and goals of the membership department and work with staff members to determine key prospects and tactics to increase the total number of memberships.
Serve as a mentor to direct reports in the membership team, including coaching and advice, holding the team accountable for results.
Oversee current member service processes. Review and implement improvements to ensure a high level of member service is maintained.
Work with the membership team to determine strategy and viability of expanding membership to non-traditional and unserved security industry professionals.
Help the membership team develop alliances and partnerships with organizations that serve to increase SIA membership.
Address HR management issues within the organization, collaborating with our outside HR consultant where appropriate.
Review and update organization HR procedures as appropriate.
Oversee compliance with the SIA mobile work policy.
Evaluate and strengthen SIA’s employee recognition program.
Oversee an annual update of job descriptions and performance review forms including the development of consistent templates and unified formatting.
Serve as the staff liaison to the SIA Human Resources Committee and contribute to research that will support SIA’s efforts to foster diversity within the industry.
Prepare the annual IT budget.
Supervise IT vendor relationships and conduct rigorous due diligence on prospective new vendors as appropriate.
Review existing IT vendor contracts for compliance. Address and resolve discrepancies.
Work collaboratively with other department directors to assess IT needs across the organization and suggest possible improvements as part of an annual IT roadmap.
Assist with a review of technology platforms used for member programs to ensure appropriate levels of member engagement.
Qualifications of the Managing Director, Finance and Operations
10-15 years of relevant experience in a professional society or trade association environment.
Strong not-for-profit financial acumen and proven experience managing accounting and budgeting in an association environment.
Experience managing outsourced vendors, including accounting, IT, and HR.
Experience managing membership acquisition and retention programs at a strategic level a plus.
Experience developing the strategic planning and full life cycle execution of multiple cross-functional initiatives.
Proven supervisory experience, including mentoring and staff development.
