Join a strong, creative team that is elevating the communications efforts of the sheet metal industry. Your vital role will include producing and developing original content for several channels including publications, website, videos, and podcasts, and then repurposing this content for distribution through social media, print, online and email.
Your mission is to bring our industry to life and give it meaning through words and imagery. Every piece of content must be of value to our key stakeholders including our members and other key stakeholders.
The successful candidate must enjoy developing and writing original content and will have experience utilizing multiple styles to deliver content effectively through various channels including social media, print and online.
You will report to the Executive Director, communications and marketing and will work closely with SMACNews Advisory Board to gather critical industry feedback and identification of important industry trends. You will manage a pool of freelance writers who will help develop some of the content for SMACNews, our award-winning publication.
In addition to editorial development, you will be responsible for overseeing the printing, production and mailing of SMACNews each month.
This position is also responsible for contributing to, and publishing, SMACNA’s weekly Member Update publication.
Coordinate the production of monthly and specialty newsletters with internal clients (SMACNA staff); interacts with members and trade press; communicates with outside service bureaus/printing companies/Web management firm; writing; proofreading; editing.

Writing and production of SMACNEWS; involves scheduling meetings, collecting article ideas, accomplishing approval process for all editorial material. Editing information/copy from SMACNA staff, members and outside contributors. Collection of images and photo rights.
Conduct interviews, write articles, coordinate freelance writers. Write social media posts connected to SMACNews articles.
Establish and maintain editorial and production timetables. MUST BE HIGHLY ORGANIZED
Coordinate and help publish email publications such as Membership Update.
Will attend 2-3 meetings per year to establish stronger business ties with members and chapter executives.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Abilities
General Skills - Keen attention to detail, deadline oriented, extremely organized, strong writing and proofreading skills. Flexibility with a fluid schedule; conceptual; strong interpersonal communication skills. Ability to think like a contractor in order to produce valuable content for them.
Technology - Proficient with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel. Basic design skills in Adobe photoshop and InDesign experience a plus; HTML coding a plus, social media platform management a must.
Education - Bachelor degree in journalism, communications or equivalent experience required.
Attributes – Self-motivated and ability to work independently on the development of content and SMACNA’s award-winning publication. Curiosity is a key to success, Eager to learn and achieve positive results.
Supervisory Responsibilities – Management of freelancers and vendors. Collaboration within department and across the organization is critical.
