Ballad Health, based in Johnson City, TN, is an integrated healthcare system with 21 hospitals and over $2 billion in gross revenue and over 255 days cash on hand. This 2,506-bed health system has over 14,000 employees, including 815 physicians, and has 77 percent of the market share in the primary service area that includes 1 million residents. The system’s primary competitors are outside of this service area
This is an excellent opportunity for a strong tax leader with healthcare experience to demonstrate their expertise in providing strategic direction in leading and streamlining tax operations for the system.
The Director reports to the SVP Financial Administration and the Corporate CFO, and will work closely with numerous other departments, including Finance, Accounting, Patient Accounting, Payroll, Reimbursement, Accounts Payable, Administration, Legal, Human Resources, IT and more. It’s essential that this professional has a broad, working knowledge of federal and state income tax reporting, as well as general accounting experience. It’s also important to have in-depth knowledge of IRS Forms 990/990T, specific to nonprofit health organizations that operate hospitals. Four tax accountants will directly report to this position, so this individual should have experience working in a team environment.
Key responsibilities of the Corporate Tax Director:
Preparing federal and state income tax returns including all related analyses and supporting documentation.
Organizing and timely complying with IRS and state tax agency audits.
Oversight of required estimated tax payments and associated accounting for tax liabilities, payments, and refunds.
Serving as departmental liaison with senior management and others within the organization concerning tax matters. The director also serves as primary liaison with the IRS, state tax agencies and external auditors.
Oversight of various departmental projects throughout the year, such as recovery of unclaimed property, annual estimation of the value of the org's tax exemption, quarterly reporting of community benefit to the states of Tennessee and Virginia, etc.
Evaluating the impact of new tax guidance emerging from the IRS or state, and sharing guidance with departments that have a need to know.
Evaluating and testing tax software with the intent to be up to date for each upcoming tax season.
Establishing goals for the Tax Department and coordinating process improvement sessions to enhance the department's operating efficiency and accuracy.
Providing ongoing education relative to community benefit.
