The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization is seeking a Foundation Relations Manager for the Philanthropy department. This position will advance the work of HSUS by identifying, researching, strategizing, cultivating, and soliciting foundation grants (focusing on $10,000 and above) in support of priority campaigns and program initiatives. Serve as the lead and contact person for The HSUS’s current and prospective foundation relationships.
This position will be responsible for:
Managing a portfolio of foundations focusing on the $10,000 and above levels;
Creating an annual strategic plan to secure a minimum of $1 million in foundation grants, including renewals, upgrades, and new sources, that supports institutional priorities;
Developing and managing a calendar of deadlines for proposals, reports and other communications with current and prospective foundation funders;
Writing letters of inquiry, granting proposals, reports and other correspondence as required by foundations;
Providing writing and editing support to program staff that are pursuing foundation grants;
Providing writing and editing support to the major gift team; maintaining a library of reports and proposals on major domestic campaigns and initiatives;
Engaging volunteer and executive leadership, program and campaign representatives in foundation fundraising activities;
Maintaining data and contacts in CRM to ensure complete and accurate information of activity, including actions, proposals, and contact information, to document progress;
Collaborating with HSUS staff across the organization to build and sustain a productive and successful foundation fundraising program, participating in regular meetings with program staff, including daily communications meetings, to get current and forward-looking information;
Consulting with accounting on program budgets and financial reports for restricted activities and provide copies submitted to foundations;
Maintaining advanced knowledge and understanding of the foundation community and grant making trends, including ongoing research on foundations, including funding priorities, grants to similar organizations, dollar range of grants funded, proposal deadlines, and Board and staff contacts;
Supporting the mission and philosophy of HSUS and maintain a working knowledge of priority campaigns and programs, as well as relevant local and regional initiatives.
Bachelor’s Degree in related field or equivalent work experience required;
Minimum of five years of development experience with proven success in foundation or corporate fundraising of grants of $10,000 or more required;
Extensive experience writing about complex issues and in response to multiple deadlines;
Strategic thinking with the ability to write and communicate the organization’s mission and programs in ways that appeal to and fit with foundation priorities;
Ability to fluently articulate programs to funding community;
Goal oriented. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments to get information on program activities, accomplishments, and plans;
The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
Knowledge of the foundation grant making community in animal welfare and protection, wildlife conservation, or related fields to suggest familiarity with major foundation funders;
Demonstrated propensity to be creative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities;
Organizational, project, and priority management skills for planning, executing and following up on issues, projects and daily responsibilities in order to meet established deadlines;
A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to the organization, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations.
